A Yoga Studio in Rainbow Colours
From a construction site to a colourful yoga wellness retreat
Before
My client approached me with a wealth of ideas and a house and home just about to be turned into her new yoga studio. I quickly discovered that my client didn't just like colour but LOVED colour and we set to work on the layout and interior design of her new studio.

Moodboard Inspiration
My client wanted a strong colour palette with yellows, blues and greens and elements of gold. We wanted to create a journey throughout the rooms. From a serene green when you enter through the wooded pathway, getting brighter as you go up the stairs.
The green entryway
Heading up the stairs we carried on the green theme with vintage furniture and accents of blue leading to the roof terrace. On the other side we are led along the hallway towards the small kitchen and changing room in a variety of aqua, classic blue, purple and gold elements. A journey through skies and ...

Green is to be seen and hues of blue

The changing room and tea kitchen with the original blue and white chequed flooring which we kept

...into the sunshine. The highlight of the studio, the yoga room in a glorious yellow and lots of natural and indirect lighting which we concentrated on to create a harmonious light day or night.

Sunshine yellow paint from Schöner Wohnen
We kept original elements such as the wooden pillars, tiled blue and white flooring from the 60's and introduced reclaimed wooden flooring in the main studio room. This created a perfect grip for bare feet, better then carpet for the yoga positions and warmer and healthier than non natural materials.
Brass accents, aqua blues and golden yellows creating a positive and happy atmoshere
We toyed with the idea of murals, wallpaper and added colour accents but decided less was more and let the colours speak for themselves.
Hallway on the way to the roof terrace

The small yoga room and office with a waterfall view and the upper floor hallway from the stairway

Cosy fireplace for winter eveings and a cosy atmosphere. A view of the changing room from the main yoga studio

Overall, the whole project took five months from start to finish and my client and her yoga students were truely impressed with the results. We had a lovely yoga-warming party in the summer to celebrate the opening and a well-earned rest after all the hard work.

Sunshine Kitchen and Blue Hue Lounge in Hamburg

There are many reasons for interior decoration, a new style a new apartment, a need for a change or just plain boredom but a water leak is not the most common or nicest one. But when I had a client call me about an emergency project I was intrigued.

A bright blue created an immediate energy boost in the bedroom

The kitchen had to be completely gutted due to the water damage and we had to start from scratch. We opened up the kitchen by knocking down the enclosing wall and give the main room more light and space. A shelf which was stood directly at the glass door, blocking the natural daylight was also removed.
Before: The three room apartment filled with midcentury pieces and modern furniture needed an airier feel

We reomoved a bulky sofa which blocked the main entrance and replaced it with a bench, the existing table and chairs were moved over to the middle of the room. We added stainless steel shelving and had brand new Ikea kitchen cupboards fitted in white and yellow which matched with the original 70's vintage doors. We then had an air vent fitted and beautiful handmade oak flooring as well as bamboo worktops fitted by our G&H carpenter. To top it off we added an oak panel in front of the glass window to incorporate extra work space.
Structure at last!
As far as the wall colour was concerned, my client wanted to go all out and instead of the plain white walls we decided on three different paint colours. A metallic copper in the hallway, which gave you a bling every time you stepped in and was accentuated by a lovely copper lamp. Then a fresh grey in the kitchen which complemented the yellow and white kitchen and in the lounge area we had an ice blue, which was far less cold than it sounds.

We shifted the sofa nearer the window and brought in larger pieces of storage furniture to balance out the many smaller pieces and limit the cluttered feel

The kitchen was a combination of yellow vintage seventies cupboards and new Ikea storage in white

In the end we had an open-plan kitchen and lounge which gave the apartment an immediate airy feel and combined all of the mid-century accessories and furniture with modern pieces. We increased the natural light by taking away shelving and dark curtains and replaced it with neutral textiles, walls in fresh palettes and storing away the clutter. It felt like a whole new apartment and later on we even allowed for a coral wall near the bathroom and a dark blue bedroom. A magnitude of colours but in complete harmony.

"I recently set up my new yoga studio. We did a lot of the work ourselves but I felt I still needed a helping hand. I met Bianca during an interiors fair and the timing could not have been better. Bianca visited me and examined the rooms. She gave me tips she worked out a moodboard and colour scheme, which we compared. Then we got to the main topic of good lighting. I had no idea about the requirements for indirect lighting, but Bianca explained it confidently and simply, which gave me immediate confidence. Her polite and at the same time very natural manner, made the teamwork very easy. I loved the end result and was immediately asked for my designer details after the studio opening in the summer.

"Thanks to Grace & Holmes for a perfect project! They helped me first to get rid off inefficient furniture and other things such as clothes and then to find great storage solutions (new closets, shelves in my storeroom) in a small apartment and to brighten up my kitchen with new wall colour and white closets. I could always rely on G&H and also think that they are a good motivator to have things changed in a simple but wonderful way."

" I just want to say thank you G&H! I really loved the way Grace & Holmes upgraded our apartment. We choose bold colors for the walls, and the ground plan was optimised. Lamps and funiture were moved to the perfect place, so that we feel perfectly comfortable."

"With Bianca’s eagle eye our daughters room gained a new structure. The most important objects are placed as accent pieces and the second most important placed more conveniently. The beautiful pieces take pride of place and unnecessary pieces are easily sold or given away. A service Bianca also provides. A more homey feel within our four walls and easily doable with the relocation and replacement of a few main pieces. A time and cost saver."

Z.B bei den runden Fenstern, hatte sie grossartige, praktische Ideen für die Aufhängung und die Qualität der Vorhänge. My client and her husband had recently moved into a fabulous converted office building. Up to that point, I was stunned by the highest celings I had ever seen in an apartment building! Nearly 4 metres and made the whole space feel enormous. What was missing though was an intimate cosiness, a splash of colour and a pinch of humour. The ingredients for the perfect apartment for two.

The impressive converted office building in Hamburg

Beautiful original detailing on the stairway as well as simple modern elements at the entrance

We wanted to stay away from the clinical white tone that the whole apartment had and decided on a dark grey which would bring down the high ceiling and create more intimacy. We chose a Brillux tone Grain de Poivre (peppercorn). The elegant palette was incorporated into the whole apartment from floor to just below the ceiling. To add glamour and old-new elements we added art noveau mouldings and then we came to the topic of wallpaper.

The view from the lounge across to the dining room and kitchen

Palettes of grey and gold

The kitchen was sleek and modern and but clients felt it lacked a certain something. Humour! They had falled in love with the infamous birch tree wallpaper and simply had to have it. But instead of papering the whole space I suggested taking one wall in the dining area. They went for the idea and to finish off the wall we added two small wooden bird houses nestles within the wallpapered branches!
Details of the beautiful birch wallpaer and added fun in the form of wooden bird houses

To top off the sleek yet 'woodland' kitchen, golden elements were added in the form of a large wire ceiling light, loving named the golden potato and a baroque style mirror. They brightened and lightened up the darker areas of the kitchen. The finished result was truely stunning.

From dining room glam to maritime lounging

We also made sure that we made good use of the textures, furniture and fittings that were already available. Beautiful interiors doesn't have to mean throwing everything away. The simplest tricks like reaaranging furniture, switching curtains or cushions around can save time money and frustration. We kept the simple white curtains which let in lots of light and harmonised perfectly with the patterns in the colouful cushions and artwork. We didn't want to go too overboard with pattern and fabric but create a good mood relaxed feel.

Bright Hamburg Artwork and textures liven up the long hallway and the large mirror widens the space

The artwork gave the whole apartment a friendly and open feel and with the help of the mirror enlarged the hallway and used the available light more effectively despite the dark walls. The tones of red were reapeated as soon as you reaching the sitting room and gave the whole entryway and lounge space a harmonious feel.

Quirky finds such as the ceramic paper bag add unexpected surprises

Testing out the bedroom lighting. Vintage style candlestick or modern simplicity. Which is better?

In the bedroom we wanted a little boudoir feel but not too over the top. We went for the one-wall wallaper trick and my client chose an exquisite gold and cream baroque style paper with a lovely sheen. We then toyed with the idea of either her large candlestick light which stood originally in the dining area or a simple modern floor lamp to create that infamous Grace & Holmes old-new, modern-antique fusion. I think she likes both!

Giving the optical illusion of a mini sofa and a cosy place to rest till the cows come home

After that we experimented with accessories. Switching cushions, artwork and decor from room to room. It's surprising how different a room can look when you change your perspective. Be brave I say!

An original vintage Mickey Mouse from the 1960s welcomes guests into the good mood lounge area

My clients (and I) loved the mix of elegant greys, glamourous gold and humour using wallpaper, mouldings, artwork and vintage pieces. And of course the G&H fusion touch, mixing antiques and contemporary styles to create that unique and personalised space. Don't be like the rest of them darling!

Girly Pink meets Antique Patina
My friend Angela was in a jam. A pink jam!

Old-new children's room where antique meets modern storage

Her daughter wanted to have a very girly bedroom in pinky hues but whilst storage was a must and that was mostly modern and white, Angela wanted to incorporate some antique furmiture into the room in order to create a style mix and teach her daughter the difference between old and new furniture in a fun and educational way.

Before: Storage chaos

Because it was important for her daughter to pick her outfits in the morning, we decided on a little art deco cupboard, small enough for her to reach her favourite clothes but sturdy enough to hold a number of other items and stay put in a room of boystrous children!
After: A colourful array of vintage and contemporary interior fusion
The result was a bedroom fit for a stylish princess with all the modern storage space available but with an antique twist.

Happily ever after

Striped Children's Chic in Hamburg Eppendorf

Stylistin, model and Yummy-Mummy to two sons my client Silvia wanted a change and at the time baby number two was on the way.

Planned was a new style for her sons bedroom. He was 2 now so that meant a grown up bed and more storage for his ever growing toy collection. So we discussed a few ideas and Silvia wanted to get away from a typical boys room of dark blue and full of pirates. She had pieces of furniture which she wanted to keep in the room such as a gorgeous art deco wardrobe and an antique chest of drawers but wanted to incorporate new pieces such as a bunkbed, a little bench which could be used for bedtime reading as well as storage and a table with midcentury style chairs for drawing and play.

Before: The wardrobe was next to the door on the left and the baby changing area behind the door. Little or no storage available

The cot (now for little brother) will be replaced by a bunkbed

So we decided on a palette of grey, white and pale blue and set to work. Sylvia liked the idea of nautical stripes and and wanted the bedroom to be a room where her toddler could grow into and not out of. We incorporated all the furniture by planning the room first (a small and slanted layout) and decided that we would move the wardrobe away from the door and on the right hand side of the space. This gave the room an immediate airy feel. We then placed the bunkbed near the door where the wardrobe had been because Sylvia explained that her son preferrd to sleep closer to the door and nearer his parents. This gave him a feeling of security. And we chose the bunkbed for two reasons. First that baby brother would eventually move in and that when there were sleep problems Sylvia or her husband could easily sleep on the top bunk.

The wallpaper we chose from Zara Home

Getting to work

Antique wardrobe meets mid-century style chairs. And not forgetting the essential toy shop

The sweet little reading bench with handmade seating cushion harmonises perfectly with the matching wallpaper, rug and picture frames in grey and white

The wardrobe was shifted to the right of th room and the cute little midcentury style chairs were found in the UK. The Ikea side table was extended in height in order for the chairs to fit underneath comfortably and make room for a quickly growing boy

The bookcase was brought in from the parents room to house the ever increasing collection of books and the bunkbed is ideal for a sleeping parent or a little brother

Sylvia was thrilled with the end result and in such a small space we still managed to increase the storage space immensely with more than enough room to extend upwards and we incorporated both contemporary and antique pieces in perfect harmony.

70s Disco meets Modern twist in Altona Hamburg
Quinessentially classic

Miid-century meets modern cosiness

My friend Sally is a lover of all things quinessentially classic. And that includes design classics. She wanted her new home to be mix of modern, vintage but also her favourite, mid-century design. We decided on neutral walls and textiles and decided to go all out on 60s and 70s glam.

Sally's lounge with her own artwork, a modern textile sofa in grey and an Eileen Gray side table

We gave her lounge an elegant feel with grey velvet curtains hung on a simple wire across the whole of the arched windows. High enough to give the room a feel of height despite the lower ceilings. Our base furniture was then a contemporary sofa in a lovely and durable textured cotton wool mix.

A decorative lamp adds a lovely fun accent and a classic cascade lamp definitive glamour

Another design classic, the Wassily chair

We then opened up the lounge area, which lead directly to the master bedroom by taking advantage of another classic, the white tulip dining table from Eero Saarinen with four Panton chairs from Vitra (ca. 1960). Over the table we decided on a some space age chrome globe cascade lights ca. 1970 to complete the look.
In the bedroom we concentrated on a calm and relaxing atmosphere overall. Simple and heavyweight curtains and a modern king-sized bed. But that didn't mean there wasn't room for a touch of humour. While we opted for plenty of little islands of light in the darker room, we also added another disco glam light over the bed as well as two side lights. On the wall to the lounge, a decoration light hanging from a pair of antlers (inherited from her parents) added an element of fun to the somewhat 'minimalist' structure!
The icing on the cake? A Wassily chair by Marcel Breuer (ca. 1925) where you could sit and admire the whole ensemble.

Poul Henningsen PH5 ceiling light meets kitchen peonies Who doesn't dream about a 50s vintage fridge?

And on to the kitchen. Sally's dream, a retro fridge. We found a bargain Gorenje in a neutral beige which added that bit of 50s vintage to the small kitchen. But small as it may have been, I think every kichen should have some form of workspace or table. We added a small table to the works with two simple Butterfly chairs in Ercol style and lit up by a classic Poul Henningsen PH5 ceiling light. As the pictures show the gold elements in the light were brought to life by Sallys's green artwork hanging on the wall behind the table. To finish off, we added textured cushions, flowers, candles and oodles of love.
So what do you think Grace & Holmers? Please feel free to give us your feedback in the comments below!

Zebra Stripes meet Art Nouveau in Hamburg
My friend Cynthia, a very multitalented singer, model and comedian was about to move. So who better to ask but her fusion designer about incorporating a mix of inherited antiques and modern design furniture in her new studio apartment in the heart of Hamburg.
Before: Lounge and bedroom

The apartment had a fairly large lounge area, a small bedroom, and an even smaller bathroom. She had inherited a few pieces from her grandmother. Beautiful coffee-house chairs, a chest of drawers and an art deco style mirror which she wanted to combine with her brand new contemporary sofa in pink in the lounge and in and neutral palette bedroom.

The pink sofa weas the perfect accent against the white walls of Cynthia's lounge and while we concentrated on the loung area at the back of the room against the wall, we shifted the focus of the music area where Cynthia taches her students to the front of the room. We put the bookcase at a slant in order to get away from a boxed in feel, which can occur in small spaces and which opens up the room. Her instruments were put on the one side of the room near sockets and direct sunlight, preventing unneccessary cabling and protecting the instruments. And seating for students was near the window where plenty of natural light would fall on the sheet music and where there was room enough to stand and sit, depending on the mood.
The perfect pink sofa meets the perfect antique coffee-house chair

In the bedroom Cynthia wanted a calming influence and neutral colours in white, soft greys and beige. We had a contemporary wardrobe and bed moved into the space and after a bit of shifting around we had the bed put near the window allowing for good light when reading and space around the bed for good access to the door opposite. The wardrobe was placed facing the door at the back of the room and because of the wardrobe's mirrored door, we made sure that its position enabled Cynthia to open the bedroom door and achieve a greater distance in which to look at herself in the mirror when trying on new outfits and shoes. The antique chest of drawers was placed facing the bed on the right of the room and we had a vintage mirror, which normally would be vertical, turned horizontal to stand along the length of the chest of drawers. And seeing as it faced the window, it was perfect for applying makeup in the morning.

Grandma's antique chest of drawers, a vertical mirror turned horizontal and a little bit of green Beautiful closeup of the patina on the chest of drawers and a lovely little reminder of the sticker which Cynthia decorated her beloved piece with, as a little girl

Reflections of old and new

In the kitchen we had accents of green and purple using accessories and flowers. We used mainly modern features and a large mirror was put against the wall above the table and two chairs in order to open up the space and reflect the sunlight coming in from the window opposite and making the kitchen even more inviting.

Greenery and a large mirror opens up the small kitchen further and creates an extra cosiness

A vintage coffee house chair meets a pop of pink sofa and a country style cupbard from Cynthia's childhood next to modern white
Needless to say Cynthia loves her new home and hopes to expand her antique collection very soon. And I would be more than happy to help her !
