On Pattern and Permanence
In compact urban living, permanence is rarely architectural.

Cornices are absent. Ceilings are modest. Walls are efficient rather than generous.
And yet — atmosphere can still be anchored.

Spacial Strategy In a Vienna apartment with contemporary bones and limited ornament, I introduced a large-scale botanical mural — not as decoration, but as spatial strategy.
Scale was the first decision.

Patterns
Small repeating patterns would have reduced the room. The vertical trees, however, elongate the wall. The dark ground recedes. The blossoms interrupt density without becoming sentimental.
Botanical surfaces carry European lineage. From 18th-century chinoiserie panels to hand-painted silk salons, they were never merely decorative. They mediated between architecture and narrative.

Continuity
What interests me is not (only) nostalgia — but continuity.
Modern urban interiors often lack gravitas because surfaces are treated as neutral backgrounds. Yet surface is not background. It is atmosphere infrastructure.

Memory
Furniture settles differently against depth. Light behaves differently against matte pigment. Shadow becomes legible.
In hospitality environments especially, memory is formed through surface long before architecture is consciously perceived.
Architecture frames. Surface lingers.
Where do you introduce permanence in your own space?

Intentional Clutter
A Bold Expression or a Recipe for Chaos?

When Clutter Becomes Chaos – This image depicts a space where intentional clutter has gone too far. Overcrowded shelves, excessive décor, and mismatched furniture result in visual overwhelm. Instead of feeling curated, the room appears disorganised and chaotic, illustrating the risk of letting curated abundance slip into actual clutter. Image: G&H Design (AI)
I n an era where interior spaces have often been defined by pared-back minimalism, a more layered and personal approach has emerged: intentional clutter. This philosophy celebrates curated abundance—embracing cherished objects, books, art, and keepsakes to craft interiors that feel warm, expressive, and deeply personal. Rather than aiming for sparse perfection, it prioritises storytelling, nostalgia, and individuality. But is this shift towards a more collected and eclectic aesthetic a sophisticated approach to design, or does it risk slipping into disorder? Inspired by insights from Elle Decoration , we explore both sides of the argument. --- The Case FOR Intentional Clutter

Intentional Clutter Done Well– This image showcases a luxurious living room where curated abundance creates a sense of warmth and sophistication. Bookshelves are thoughtfully arranged with books, art, and personal objects, while layered textiles and a vintage rug add depth. The space feels lived-in yet refined, demonstrating how intentional clutter can be balanced and elegant. Image: G&H Design (AI)
1. A Home with Character and Storytelling A well-designed home should be a reflection of its inhabitants—rich with memories, experiences, and personal treasures. Intentional clutter embraces this philosophy, allowing for the display of meaningful objects that narrate your journey. Unlike minimalist spaces, which can sometimes feel impersonal, this approach encourages a sense of connection and authenticity. Grace & Holmes Tip: Curate objects in thoughtful vignettes rather than scattering them randomly. A carefully composed arrangement of books, framed photographs, and heirlooms can feel intentional rather than haphazard. 2. A Warmer, More Inviting Atmosphere Minimalist interiors often prioritise restraint, but this can sometimes lead to spaces that feel stark or unwelcoming. A home enriched with textiles, books, and layered décor can exude warmth and comfort, making guests feel immediately at ease. Grace & Holmes Tip: Use a neutral colour palette for walls and larger furniture pieces to provide a calm foundation. This allows curated objects to stand out without overwhelming the space. 3. A Move Away from Perfectionism For years, interior design has been shaped by the idea of controlled minimalism, where every object must justify its presence. Intentional clutter rejects the pressure of perfection, advocating instead for a home that evolves organically. Grace & Holmes Tip: Focus on balance rather than precision. An asymmetrical yet harmonious display can feel effortlessly stylish without appearing overstyled. --- The Case AGAINST Intentional Clutter

Minimalist Contrast – In contrast, this image presents a modern minimalist living room, where clean lines, open space, and a neutral colour palette create a calm and serene environment. The carefully selected décor pieces demonstrate restraint, offering a **refined alternative** to intentional clutter for those who prefer simplicity. Image: G&H Design (AI) 1. The Fine Line Between ‘Curated’ and ‘Chaotic' The challenge with layering objects is that too much can tip the balance from curated to chaotic. Without careful editing, what begins as a deliberate arrangement can quickly become visually overwhelming. Grace & Holmes Tip: Apply a one-in, one-out rule—for every new decorative item introduced, consider removing or rotating an existing piece to maintain clarity and refinement.
2. Increased Maintenance and Cleaning A more layered interior inherently means more surfaces to dust and more objects to maintain. Unlike streamlined spaces, which are easy to keep pristine, a home filled with decorative elements requires regular upkeep. Grace & Holmes Tip : Use elegant closed storage solutions—such as antique cabinets or woven baskets—to house objects that are not in everyday use, keeping the aesthetic refined rather than cluttered. 3. Not Every Space Can Accommodate This Aesthetic Not all interiors lend themselves to an abundance of displayed objects. In smaller homes or apartments, excessive layering can make rooms feel cramped rather than characterful. Grace & Holmes Tip: If space is limited, designate a single focal point—a bookshelf, a gallery wall, or a coffee table—for curated clutter, rather than spreading decorative elements throughout the entire home. --- Should You Embrace Intentional Clutter? The answer lies in how you defines balance and refinement. For those who value interiors that tell a story and feel lived-in, intentional clutter can bring warmth and individuality. However, if you lean towards serene, organised spaces, this approach may feel overwhelming. At Grace & Holmes, every client project begins with decluttering—not to strip away personality, but to uncover what truly matters. We often find that people are drowning in ‘stuff’, overwhelmed by possessions that no longer serve them. Some take the extreme approach of discarding everything and shifting to pure minimalism, only to realise that an empty, impersonal space leaves them feeling lost. It lacks warmth, history, and soul—because it isn’t them. That’s why we have a rigorous sorting method that allows clients to rediscover what they truly love. The result? Interiors that are multi-layered, curated, and deeply personal. A home should feel like an extension of its owner—filled with authenticity, emotion, and character. Just like our clients, the best interiors evolve over time, telling a story that is uniquely theirs. Whether you embrace intentional clutter or prefer a more structured aesthetic, the key is curating with care—allowing each piece to serve a purpose, evoke a memory, or bring beauty to your space. Where do you stand on this approach to interiors? Do you favour layered storytelling or serene simplicity? Share your thoughts below.

Interior Styles A Burst of Colour, Creativity, and Expression
Photo: Unsplash I nterior design is embracing a revival of colour, creativity, and personality, moving away from the stark minimalism of recent years. Our homes are no longer just places to live; they’re evolving into dynamic, joyful sanctuaries that reflect who we are, how we feel, and what inspires us. With themes like dopamine décor, hand-painted artistry, and a renewed love for uplifting hues, there’s an undeniable shift towards interiors that are as emotional as they are beautiful. Let’s explore some of the most exciting ways to bring energy, artistry, and optimism into your spaces, inspired by the bold, unapologetic approach to colour that 2025 promises. ---
1. Dopamine Décor: Vibrancy That Sparks Joy
Photo: Unsplash
Photo: Unsplash
Dopamine Décor celebrates bold, joyful colours and playful design that stimulates happiness — a perfect antidote to neutral spaces that no longer inspire. This approach is all about embracing vivid shades, expressive patterns, and whimsical elements to create interiors that lift your mood the moment you step inside. Think deep greens paired with rich yellows, statement walls in shades of pink or coral, and accessories in bright, energetic hues. Mix and match textures like velvet cushions, patterned rugs, and bold artwork to infuse your rooms with personality and life. Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 forecast highlights “dopamine-drenched colours,” such as punchy lilacs and glitzy golds, paired with pastel greens and warm whites to create spaces that are both playful and accessible.
Photo: Unsplash How to Start Small: - Incorporate bright, colourful throw pillows, lampshades, or artwork. - Experiment with a feature wall in a vibrant hue or wallpaper with oversized patterns. - Introduce statement furniture like a cobalt-blue sofa or a mustard armchair. Why It Works: - Colour has a proven effect on mood; bright tones encourage optimism and creativity. - It allows for personal expression, turning your home into a reflection of your happiness and individuality. Design Tip: If bold colours feel intimidating, balance them with grounding neutrals like warm white, soft beige, or earthy wood finishes. --- 2. Hand-Painted Murals: Artistry That Tells a Story Photo: Rebel Walls
There’s something captivating about a hand-painted mural — it brings art to life in a way no framed print can. Murals, both bold and subtle, are making their way into modern homes as a powerful form of self-expression. From elegant, muted designs to vibrant, larger-than-life statements, they can transform any space into a personal masterpiece. Nature themes are particularly beloved, with soft botanical scenes, delicate florals, and serene landscapes creating calming backdrops. Alternatively, geometric designs and abstract patterns offer a contemporary twist, bringing energy and depth to your walls. Think nostalgic, heritage-inspired palettes of rich reds, greens, and blues. These colours honour tradition while remaining fresh when paired with more modern tones. Where to Use Murals: - Living Rooms: A striking accent wall can define the space and anchor your decor. - Children’s Rooms: Playful and imaginative murals create a whimsical wonderland. - Stairwells and Hallways: These often-overlooked spaces can come alive with hand-painted details. Why Murals Matter: - They tell a story unique to you, offering a bespoke, personalised design. - Hand-painted art adds craftsmanship and authenticity to your space, setting it apart from mass-produced alternatives. Getting Started: Commission a local artist to create a mural inspired by your home’s story, or experiment with stencils and DIY designs for a budget-friendly option. --- 3. Yellow Kitchens: A Cheerful Heart of the Home
Photo: Unsplash
Yellow has always been associated with happiness, and it’s quickly becoming the go-to colour for breathing new life into kitchens. Whether you choose a buttery pastel, deep ochre, or golden mustard, yellow cabinetry, splashbacks, and accents instantly create warmth and cheer. Sue Wadden from Sherwin-Williams notes that “buttery yellows” will play a significant role in interior design. While they may not be the “Colour of the Year,” these shades are poised to dominate kitchen spaces, offering a refreshing departure from traditional neutrals. Yellow works beautifully across different styles: - Modern Kitchens: Pair sleek yellow cabinetry with matte black hardware and clean lines for a contemporary finish. - Classic Country Kitchens:** Pale yellow cabinets combined with wood accents, open shelving, and vintage accessories create a cosy, timeless feel. - Eclectic Spaces: Vibrant yellow tiles, colourful appliances, and mismatched chairs can bring fun and character to the kitchen. If full yellow cabinets feel too bold, opt for smaller touches such as sunny bar stools, patterned backsplash tiles, or pendant lights in a bright golden hue. Why Yellow? - It’s uplifting and energising, perfect for the space where families gather and memories are made. - Yellow symbolises positivity, light, and warmth — creating a welcoming heart for your home. **Design Tip:** To maintain balance, pair yellow tones with natural elements like wood, marble countertops, or soft grey accents for a sophisticated finish. --- 4. Living Mood: Mocha Mousse by PANTONE
Photo: INTERLÜBKE
The PANTONE Colour of the Year, Mocha Mousse (PANTONE 17-1230), introduces a versatile and sophisticated hue to interiors. This earthy tone balances refined elegance with warmth, making it an ideal foundation or accent in various design styles. Mocha Mousse adapts effortlessly to minimalist modern schemes or traditional, detail-rich spaces. Its inviting neutrality promotes a sense of comfort and wellbeing, encouraging homeowners to create spaces that feel personal and harmonious. How to Incorporate Mocha Mousse: - Use it as a grounding base colour for walls, paired with brighter accents or metallic details. - Combine with natural textures like stone, wood, or rattan to enhance its earthy appeal. - Introduce it through soft furnishings such as throws, cushions, or upholstered furniture to add warmth without overpowering a room.

Photo: LA CORNUE
Photo: HARLEQUIN This hue inspires designs that focus on cosiness and connection, making it a perfect choice for living rooms, bedrooms, and communal spaces.

Extra Tip: But you have to love the colour! Don't let 'trends' define your true style and self. --- 5. Textured and Layered Neutrals: Warmth with Subtle Sophistication
Photo: SCHLOSSBERG
Photo: KIEFFER For those who prefer a more subdued palette, neutrals are stepping up with new life. This year, beige, taupe, and soft greys are taking on richer, earthier undertones, complemented by layers of texture and natural materials. These nuanced neutrals feel warm and grounding, offering a sophisticated backdrop that pairs beautifully with bolder design choices elsewhere in your home. An organic grey and brown palette reflects this shift, drawing inspiration from natural stone and raw materials showcased at Milan Design Week. Ways to Add Depth to Neutrals: - Incorporate textured fabrics like linen, wool, or boucle. - Add natural materials such as raw wood, rattan, stone, or clay pottery. - Layer neutral tones in different shades to create a soft, calming effect. Neutrals don’t have to be boring; when mixed with rich textures and warm accents, they can be incredibly inviting and luxurious. --- 6. Curated Chaos: Mixing Patterns, Colours, and Styles
Photo: Unsplash
For those who love breaking the rules, the concept of “curated chaos” is the perfect approach to interior design. This style invites you to mix bold colours, unexpected patterns, and contrasting textures, creating spaces that are full of life and energy without feeling messy. Sherwin-Williams calls this “a little bit of chaos,” where impactful bursts of colour—like a painted trim or bold furniture—can redefine a space without overwhelming it. Rich jewel tones, dopamine brights, and heritage colours all have their place in this playful, daring design philosophy. The key lies in intentional layering: - Pair floral patterns with geometric prints. - Mix vintage furniture with modern accents. - Use bold colours as highlights against more subtle backdrops. Curated chaos is about embracing imperfection and creating homes that feel lived-in, loved, and uniquely yours. --- The Transformative Power of Colour and Creativity Your home should inspire you every day. Whether through the uplifting energy of dopamine décor, the artistic beauty of hand-painted murals, or the cosy elegance of Mocha Mousse, there are endless ways to reimagine your space. From rich neutrals to curated chaos, colour and creativity give your home a voice — one that reflects your story, passions, and personality.

T here’s something irresistibly romantic about a train journey, especially one that weaves together history, luxury, and breathtaking scenery. Enter the Britannic Explorer, England and Wales’ first-ever luxury sleeper train. In a world that constantly rushes from A to B, the Britannic Explorer offers a seductive counterpoint: the art of slow travel. Think of it as Britain’s most charming new adventure, blending the nostalgia of a bygone era with a modern, creative twist. For me, the allure of a luxury train journey is deeply personal. On my 40th birthday, I was fortunate enough to experience the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, traveling from Paris to London. It was unforgettable—an elegant whirlwind of art deco glamour, impeccable service, and awe-inspiring views. I’ve written about that magical trip here] , but trust me when I say that luxury trains are unlike any other form of travel. They elevate the journey itself to an experience you’ll treasure forever.

Rediscover the Joy of Touring Once upon a time, touring wasn’t about ticking off Instagram-worthy landmarks in a blur. It was about the *journey*, the people you met, and the stories you collected along the way. Belmond’s Britannic Explorer revives this tradition, inviting travelers to explore England and Wales through a fresh lens. This isn’t just a train ride; it’s an invitation to immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Britain’s villages, cities, and landscapes. The experience begins the moment you step into your private suite. Lavishly appointed and impeccably designed, these suites serve as your cosy retreat, offering panoramic views of rolling hills, sparkling waters, and rugged peaks. Whether you’re sipping a perfectly steeped cup of tea as the Welsh valleys unfold before you or unwinding with a glass of wine while Cornwall’s coast glimmers in the distance, this is travel as it should be: unhurried, indulgent, and utterly captivating.

As Ottalie Stride, creative director of the project, describes, the Britannic Explorer is “like a jewellery box,” offering compact yet exquisite interiors filled with timeless elegance and charm. From the **Grand Suites**, named after native botanicals like *Valerian*, *Juniper*, and *Elder*, to the oak-paneled **double and twin cabins**, the train blends nostalgia with serenity. Design touches, such as graphic art by Olly Fathers and a colour palette inspired by nature, enhance its sophisticated allure. The observation car serves as a vibrant hub, featuring a Victorian apothecary-inspired bar, plush banquettes, and fine burl wood accents, while the dining cars, **Malva** and **Samphire**, showcase seasonal, farm-to-table menus by celebrated chef Simon Rogan. Guests can also unwind in the powder room and wellness suite, adorned with marine botanical-inspired art, calming blue tones, and fossil-like limestone flooring. Wellness-focused off-board excursions complete the immersive, mindful experience. A Journey Through Britain’s Greatest Hits The Britannic Explorer’s itinerary reads like a love letter to Britain’s most iconic landscapes. Picture this:

Cottage Project Update: A Journey in Vienna’s Grinzing

W elcome back to the Grace & Holmes blog! It’s been an exciting few months, and I’m thrilled to give you a behind-the-scenes look at the progress of my cottage project in the heart of Vienna’s charming Grinzing. With a summer start and now about 75% complete, I wanted to share some of the design choices and creative updates that are transforming this once-empty space into a cosy, multifunctional retreat. In my latest newsletter, I mentioned two of the themed rooms, but now let's take a deeper dive. Designing for Functionality and Style Given that the cottage is a small, multifunctional space, my first task was to design a practical layout. The challenge was to maximise functionality without overcrowding the rooms. I wanted to maintain an airy and open feel, while also ensuring it was versatile enough to accommodate work, relaxation, and entertaining.

Kitchen-Lounge Combo: Green and Gold Accents The heart of the home is always the kitchen, but in this project, it’s even more special as it blends seamlessly into the lounge. The kitchen area itself was tricky, as storage and worktop space were limited. I needed to get creative. After researching and measuring (several times!), I finally found the perfect solution: an integrated kitchen island that ticks all the boxes. This piece is multifunctional—offering storage, a workspace, and seating for 4-6 people. The best part? It doubles as a bar area and even has space for a decorative vase of flowers. Now, I can entertain guests, cook, and work—all in one spot.

For the lounge, I leaned into a rich green theme with a lush velvet sofa that doubles as a sofa bed. This ensures I have plenty of room for overnight guests. To complement the sofa, I added touches of gold—think a vintage carpet in golden hues and matching cushions to bring warmth to the space. Dark green bookcases on either side of the sofa serve dual purposes, providing storage and acting as side tables where guests can place their coffee or tea. With no need for a bulky coffee table, the space stays open and uncluttered.

Near the window, I couldn’t resist adding a green velvet armchair with a matching stool—a cosy reading nook that also provides extra seating for guests. All that's left is to decide on the perfect curtains and lighting. I’m torn between a funky stork wall light for a playful touch or a classic chandelier to add a bit of vintage elegance. What would you suggest? To tie the space together, I’m planning to complete the lounge with a garden-themed mural behind the sofa, bringing in a touch of nature to complement the rich greens.

A Practical Yet Magical Hallway The hallway in a small cottage is often overlooked, but not here! I wanted to make it as practical as it is inviting. A slim-fitted shoe cabinet keeps things neat, while a bamboo bench provides a convenient spot to sit while putting on shoes. However, the magic lies in the details. I’m planning to turn this hallway into a statement entryway with a playful 'Giraffe Loves wall' lamp and vintage posters in bright colours. The rainbow doormat is already in place, setting a joyful tone the moment you walk in the door.

Bedroom: A Cloud-Like Escape The bedroom has a calm, ethereal theme. I opted for shades of blue to create a peaceful, cloud-like sanctuary. We’ve installed a stunning blue mural and chosen a plush, cocoon-style bed upholstered in soft blue fabric—perfect for cosy nights. The Persian-style rug adds warmth underfoot, while the minimalist desk by the window offers a tranquil spot to work, with views of the surrounding trees.

To maximise storage, we went with a wall-to-wall wardrobe, which keeps the room clutter-free without sacrificing space. Once the lighting, shutters, and seating are in place, this room will be the perfect peaceful retreat. I’m so excited to see it all come together.
What’s Next? While we’re so close to the finish line, a few exciting projects still await. The garden and terrace will be the final outdoor escape, and I can’t wait to share more about the plans for this space soon. Additionally, a bathroom update is in the works to make sure the cottage is as functional and comfortable as possible.
So watch this space for the full reveal, initial sketches and more before and after pictures in the next installment.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Should I go for a funky stork wall light or keep things more classic with a chandelier? What do you think of the colour themes? Your suggestions are always welcome! Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to completion—exciting things are ahead! Until next time, Bianca from Grace & Holmes

Timeless Transformations: 7 Stylish Fusion Secrets for Your Property
W elcome to the ultimate guide for blending classic charm with modern sophistication in your period property. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the idea of fusing styles while staying true to your home’s historical roots, worry not! We’ve crafted this guide to be your compass, helping you navigate through the delightful world of interior design with ease and confidence. Let’s dive into seven fusion styles that will make your (period) property feel fresh, fabulous, and uniquely yours. 1. Modern Rustic Elegance: The Countryside Comeback Imagine the charm of a country cottage with all the comforts of modern living—this is the essence of Modern Rustic Elegance. It’s about blending rustic elements with sleek, contemporary touches to create a space that feels both cosy and chic.
Classic country, light and airy with natural materials

Concrete Tips:
Mix Materials: Combine traditional wooden furniture with modern accents. Pair an antique oak dining table with streamlined, contemporary chairs. This creates an inviting contrast that celebrates both old and new. Bold Colours and Patterns: Don’t shy away from vibrant hues. Choose deep forest greens, rich burgundies, or navy blues for feature walls or upholstery. Paint one wall in a striking colour while keeping the rest neutral for a balanced look. Textures Galore: Layer different textures for added warmth. Combine a chunky knit throw with a sleek leather sofa and a plush wool rug. This mix will make your space feel like a warm hug.

Modern country can also be dark and moody

Extra Value: DIY Rustic Touch: Transform old wooden crates into charming storage pieces or side tables. It’s a simple way to add character and functionality. Herb Gardens: For a touch of countryside charm, start a small herb garden in your kitchen. It’s a delightful way to bring a bit of the outdoors inside. Personal Touch: Modern Rustic Elegance is about creating a home where you can imagine yourself sipping tea by the fire, while still enjoying the perks of modern comforts. It’s all about blending nostalgia with contemporary ease, ensuring your home is both stylish and snug. 2. Retro Pop Revival: Funky 70s Flair Step into a world of vibrant colours and playful patterns with Retro Pop Revival. This style brings the lively spirit of the 70s into your home, combining bold aesthetics with modern sensibilities.
Good mood colours and cosy-comforts
Concrete Tips:
Playful Patterns: Mix and match patterns with confidence. Pair a floral wallpaper with a geometric rug, or throw some polka-dot cushions onto a striped sofa. Just keep the colour palette cohesive to avoid visual overload. Metallic Accents: Add a touch of glamour with metallic finishes. Brass or gold light fixtures and accessories can bring a touch of 70s sophistication to your space. Statement Pieces: Invest in a few standout items like a bright, colourful sofa or a quirky lamp. These pieces will act as focal points and conversation starters in your room. Extra Value: Upcycling: Refresh an old chair with a bold coat of paint in a funky colour. This is a cost-effective way to add personality to your space. Gallery Wall: Create a vibrant gallery wall with retro-inspired artwork. Mix vintage posters with modern prints for a dynamic visual experience. Personal Touch: Retro Pop Revival is like hosting a groovy party in your living room every day. It’s about embracing the fun side of design and creating a space that radiates joy and creativity. 3. Mid-Century Magic: Channeling Classic Elegance Channel the elegance of the mid-20th century with a style that celebrates sleek lines, functional beauty, and understated glamour. Mid-Century Magic brings the best of past sophistication into contemporary settings.

Classical elegance in retro 50s style
Concrete Tips:
Iconic Furniture: Invest in classic mid-century pieces like a streamlined sofa or a sculptural coffee table. These items are timeless and add a touch of elegance to your space. Muted Palettes: Opt for soft, muted colours like grey, beige, or muted blue. These tones create a serene, sophisticated atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxing. Natural Elements: Incorporate natural materials such as wood and stone. A wooden coffee table or a stone lamp base can add a touch of organic beauty to your space. Extra Value:
Minimalist Storage: Use sleek, minimalist storage solutions like floating shelves or a simple sideboard. These will help keep your space uncluttered and stylish. Indoor Plants: Add a touch of greenery with indoor plants. They bring life and a bit of nature into your home, enhancing the mid-century vibe. Personal Touch: Mid-Century Magic is about achieving a blend of form and function with effortless grace. It’s like hosting a sophisticated cocktail party where every detail is thoughtfully designed to impress and relax. 4. Chalk Paint Charm: Eco-Friendly Elegance Chalk paint is your go-to for adding character and sustainability to your home. It’s perfect for revitalising old furniture or giving your walls a chic, matte finish.
Chalk paint is sustainable yet sensitive so avoid high-traffic areas
Concrete Tips:
Furniture Revamp: Use chalk paint to refresh old furniture. A vintage dresser or an old chair can become a standout piece with a coat of vibrant or muted chalk paint. Accent Details: Apply chalk paint to small details like the insides of drawers or lamp bases. These unexpected touches add personality and charm. Smooth Finish: For a professional look, sand between coats of paint. This step ensures a smooth, high-quality finish that enhances the overall appearance. Extra Value: Eco-Friendly Options: Choose chalk paints with natural ingredients and minimal environmental impact. They’re better for both your home and the planet.
Pro Tip: For easy updates, use removable wallpaper or fabric for a quick change when you’re ready for a new look. Personal Touch: Chalk paint allows you to get creative while making eco-friendly choices. Each project becomes a personal expression of your style and commitment to sustainability. 5. Texture Layering: Crafting a Cosy Sanctuary Layering textures is key to creating a home that feels warm and inviting. It’s about mixing materials to achieve a space that’s not just beautiful but also incredibly cosy.
Different textures create interest and also feel lovely!
Concrete Tips: Texture Mix: Combine various textures like a soft wool rug with a chunky knit throw and velvet cushions. This layering adds depth and makes your space feel warm and welcoming. Contrasting Elements: Pair hard materials like metal with softer ones like suede or velvet. For example, a metal coffee table looks stunning with a plush suede armchair. Extra Value:
Thrifted Textiles: Explore thrift stores for unique textiles. You might find beautiful throws or cushions that add character without breaking the bank. Seasonal Rotation: Swap out heavier throws and cushions for lighter ones in summer. This keeps your home feeling fresh and in tune with the seasons. Personal Touch: Layering textures is all about creating a space that feels both stylish and snug. It’s like wrapping your home in a cozy blanket, making every corner inviting and full of personality. 6. Wallpaper Wonders: Transform Your Walls Wallpaper is back with a bang, offering endless possibilities for transforming your walls into captivating features. Whether you prefer bold patterns or subtle textures, there’s a wallpaper style for everyone.
Wallpaper can be daring or subtle
Concrete Tips:
Feature Walls: Choose a striking wallpaper for one wall to create a dramatic focal point. Patterns like geometric shapes or classic florals can make a big impact. Unexpected Applications: Apply wallpaper to less conventional areas like the inside of cupboards or behind shelves. These hidden touches add a bit of surprise and delight. Coordinated Decor: Match your wallpaper with complementary textiles and accessories. If you have a floral wallpaper, coordinate it with cushions or curtains in similar patterns or colours. Extra Value: Removable Wallpaper: For flexibility and easy updates, opt for removable wallpaper. It allows you to experiment with different looks without long-term commitment. Pro Tip: Use wallpaper as a backdrop for a gallery wall. This adds depth and interest to your display, making it a standout feature in your room. Personal Touch: Wallpaper is like giving your walls a stylish makeover. It’s an opportunity to infuse your space with personality and creativity, making each room uniquely yours. 7. Sustainable Flooring: Elegant and Eco-Friendly Flooring sets the foundation for your home’s look and feel. Choosing sustainable flooring options not only enhances your interior design but also reflects your commitment to the environment.
There's nothing more feet friendly as natural stone and real wood

Concrete Tips:
Cork Flooring: Cork is warm and comfortable underfoot, making it ideal for living areas and bedrooms. It’s also a natural, eco-friendly choice. Reclaimed Wood: Opt for reclaimed wood flooring to add character and history to your home. Each plank is unique, bringing a touch of the past into your space. Maintenance: Keep cork flooring in good condition with pH-neutral cleaners. For reclaimed wood, regular oiling will help maintain its natural beauty. Extra Value:
Underfloor Heating: Consider underfloor heating for extra comfort. It not only keeps your feet warm but also improves energy efficiency. Eco-Friendly Options: Choose flooring materials with low environmental impact, such as recycled content or sustainable sources. Personal Touch: Sustainable flooring choices are like stepping onto a piece of history with a modern twist. They reflect your commitment to both style and environmental responsibility, making your home a true haven.
Transforming your period property with these seven fusion styles is about celebrating the best of both worlds—classic elegance and contemporary flair. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a home that’s not only stylish but also a true reflection of your personality. Embrace the journey, have fun

Burgh Island: A Timeless Gem That Continues to Shine
A look back and some good news

The landscape is breathtaking in itself
As a passionate lover of classic interiors and all things elegant, few places in the world have captured my heart quite like Burgh Island. My visit to this iconic island last year was truly unforgettable. Steeped in history and rich with a distinctive charm, Burgh Island is a place where time stands still, offering an enchanting blend of Art Deco splendor and a sense of mystery that echoes the spirit of one of its most famous guests—Agatha Christie. This legendary island holds a special place in my heart, not only for its stunning architecture and breathtaking views but also for its deep connection to the world of literature. Agatha Christie, the queen of mystery, found inspiration here, and it's easy to see why. The island’s hotel served as the setting for her famous novel *Evil Under the Sun,* and it’s said that Christie wrote parts of *And Then There Were None* while staying on the island. Walking through the hotel’s elegant corridors, you can almost feel the presence of her characters, brought to life in a setting that is as intriguing as the stories she penned.

Our mode of transportation to the island was the beach tractor. Great fun. Alternatively on foot by low tide or swim!

It’s no wonder that Burgh Island has a timeless appeal. With its striking Art Deco design, which has been lovingly preserved, and its unique position on a tidal island that feels wonderfully secluded, it’s a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life—design, history, and a touch of mystery.

Our first glimpse of the hotel

A picturesque pub and blue skies await us

So, you can imagine my excitement when I learned that Burgh Island, which was put on the market about a year ago, is now officially off the market. The owners, who have cared for this remarkable place over the past six years, ultimately decided they couldn’t part with it, despite receiving offers. This decision is a testament to the enduring allure of Burgh Island and the importance of preserving its legacy.

I can understand why Agatha Chrisitie found her Inspiration here What makes this news even more thrilling is that Giles Fuchs, the owner, has announced plans to invest significantly in the island’s future. The commitment to further enhance the décor and services ensures that Burgh Island will not only retain its historic charm but also offer an elevated experience for guests. For those of us who are passionate about interiors, the prospect of seeing how this iconic location will continue to evolve while staying true to its storied past is incredibly exciting.

Beautiful Art Deco elements everywhere you look

I’m also delighted to share that Kati Latchford, the previous Hotel Manager, has returned to Burgh Island, joining a team that is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the guest experience. Together, they will continue to welcome visitors to this extraordinary place, ensuring that its legacy—and its connection to Agatha Christie—lives on.

No words needed
For those who appreciate the elegance of the past, coupled with the comforts of the present, Burgh Island remains a destination like no other. I’m already looking forward to my next visit, to immerse myself once again in its timeless beauty, and to see how it continues to celebrate both its history and its future.

I could easily spend a few months here just writing, designing and relaxing
Here’s to the enduring charm of Burgh Island and the joy it brings to all who step upon its shores!

Perfecting Period Charm A Guide to Interior Fusion for a 19th-Century Station House
The entryway of the Station House
Buying a period property, especially one as rich in history as this 19th-century station house in Tyne and Wear on sale for 525,000 GBP freehold , is an exciting endeavor. With its stock brick façade, slate mansard roof, and arched windows, this former station master’s home blends historical significance with rural charm.
For buyers new to period properties, merging the old-world allure with modern comforts can seem daunting. This guide provides detailed tips on how to achieve a harmonious interior fusion, with practical advice tailored for both local and international clientele. Setting the Scene: Honoring the Past Understanding the historical context of your period property is essential, particularly for international buyers unfamiliar with UK heritage. Built circa 1855, this station house was a pivotal part of the Derwent Valley Railway’s Consett Line during the industrial revolution. Appreciating the home’s history will help you preserve its unique features, such as the arched windows and slate roof, while blending them with modern elements. It’s important to recognise that many UK period properties are protected by heritage laws. These regulations may restrict changes to the exterior and significant architectural elements. Before making any alterations, consult with local planning authorities or a heritage consultant to ensure compliance.

Tips for Interior Fusion: Blending Period Charm with Modern Living
Take into consideration features such as original windows, stucco and woodwork 1. Respect the Original Architecture - Highlight Architectural Features: - Retain the original arched windows as focal points in the living spaces. Enhance these with custom-made curtains or blinds that respect the period style—opt for velvet or damask fabrics for a luxurious touch, or linen for a more understated look. - Tip: Sourcing custom treatments can be simplified by working with UK-based artisans who specialise in period interiors. They can provide tailored solutions that meet local conservation standards. - Preserve Original Materials: - If the property has original brickwork or timber beams, these should be cleaned and treated rather than covered. Exposed brick walls can be sealed to prevent dust while maintaining their rustic appeal. - Tip: You should consider hiring a local restoration expert to ensure that treatments and repairs are done using appropriate, historically accurate methods and materials. This is particularly important in the UK, where traditional craftsmanship is highly valued in period homes.

Don't shy away from daring contrasts. It can look amazing 2. Balance Old and New - Juxtapose Styles: - In a room with original Victorian features, such as a fireplace or molding, introduce contemporary furniture like a minimalist leather sofa or a glass coffee table. The contrast between modern and period pieces can create a dynamic, yet cohesive look. - Tip: As a buyer you can source modern furniture locally to match the scale and style of the property. For example, Scandinavian furniture, known for its simplicity and functionality, can complement the ornate details of a Victorian home without overwhelming them. - Use Neutral Palettes: - Use soft, neutral colours like warm whites, taupes, and light greys to create a soothing backdrop that allows the period details to stand out. These colours also help to visually connect spaces, making transitions between rooms feel seamless. - Tip: When choosing paint, you should consider UK-based brands like Farrow & Ball, which offer heritage-inspired palettes specifically designed for period properties. These paints are often formulated to match traditional colors while offering the durability of modern products.
Take advantage of natural light and don't overcrown. Let your rooms breathe
3. Incorporate Natural Light - Maximise Window Views: - Arrange furniture to make the most of the abundant natural light and countryside views. In the kitchen, place a breakfast table near the window to create a cozy spot for morning coffee with a view of the garden. - Tip: You should consider light levels throughout the year when designing their spaces. In the UK, winters can be quite dark, so maximizing natural light through thoughtful furniture placement and mirror use is crucial. - Use Light Fabrics: - Opt for light, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for curtains and upholstery. These materials allow light to filter in while maintaining a fresh, airy feel, perfect for creating a welcoming atmosphere in a period home. - Tip: You might want to source fabrics from renowned European suppliers known for their quality and range of period-appropriate textiles. For example, Belgian linen is highly regarded for its durability and natural beauty.
Avoid clunky furniture. Choose pieces with elegant legs so your eyes easily move arounf the room and it feels airy 4. Create a Cohesive Flow - Consistent Flooring: - Choose a consistent flooring material, such as wide-plank oak or reclaimed timber, throughout the home to create a unified aesthetic. This approach ties together different rooms and complements both period and contemporary styles. - Tip: If importing flooring materials, international clients should be mindful of the climate and local building standards. Wood flooring, for example, needs to be acclimatized to the UK’s humid climate to prevent warping. - Blend Colour Schemes: - Maintain a cohesive colour palette throughout the house. For instance, a light grey living room can transition into a slightly darker grey in the dining room, creating a smooth flow while adding depth and interest. - Tip: You might consider hiring a local interior designer familiar with period properties and UK trends. This ensures that colour schemes and materials are appropriate for both the home’s style and the local environment.

A kitchen can only profit from an old-new mix 5. Modern Amenities with a Classic Touch - Update with Care: - When updating the kitchen, consider integrating modern appliances with a period-appropriate design. For instance, choose a refrigerator or oven with a retro look that complements the station house’s historical charm. - Tip: You should be aware of voltage differences if importing appliances. The UK uses a 230-volt system, so ensure that any imported electronics are compatible or plan to install transformers. - Technology in Disguise: - Hide modern technology, such as flat-screen TVs or sound systems, behind custom cabinetry that matches the period style of the room. This approach allows you to enjoy modern conveniences without disrupting the historical aesthetic. - Tip: Consider investing in multi-room audio systems that can be discreetly integrated into the home. UK-based companies like Bowers & Wilkins offer high-end, customizable solutions that blend seamlessly into period properties.

A mix of pattern, texture and materials bring a richness and personality to your home. Enhancing Outdoor Spaces The station house is surrounded by mature gardens, including fruit-bearing apple trees, which are as much a part of the property’s charm as its interior. Enhancing these outdoor spaces can further blend the property’s historical significance with modern living.

What is a house without a garden
1. Create Garden Rooms - Divide the garden into distinct areas, such as a dining space, a vegetable garden, and a relaxation nook. Use hedges, trellises, or low stone walls to define these spaces while maintaining an open feel. - Tip: International clients can work with UK-based landscape designers who specialize in period properties to ensure the garden design complements the historical character of the house. Consider native plants that thrive in the local climate for easy maintenance.

Who needs black or grey when you can choose a colourful entryway
2. Maintain Mature Trees - The apple trees in the garden are not only beautiful but also provide a bountiful harvest. Regular pruning and care are essential to keep them healthy and productive. Consider planting additional fruit trees to enhance the rural feel and create an orchard-like setting. - Tip: If you’re an international buyer, consider hiring a local arborist who understands the specific needs of UK fruit trees. This ensures that the trees remain healthy and productive for years to come. 3. Blend with the Landscape - Use natural materials, such as stone and wood, for garden features like patios or walkways to ensure they blend seamlessly with the surrounding countryside. Consider a gravel path lined with lavender or rosemary for a quintessentially English garden feel. - Tip: International clients should consider the local environment when planning outdoor spaces. In the UK, a rainwater collection system can be a smart investment, both for sustainability and to keep the garden lush during drier months.

Pure harmony...
Living in a period property like this 19th-century station house offers a unique opportunity to blend historical charm with modern convenience. By respecting the home’s original features, thoughtfully balancing old and new elements, and making informed decisions based on local expertise, you can create a living space that honors the past while embracing the present.
Whether you’re a local buyer or coming from abroad, these tips will help you navigate the nuances of period property ownership and design, ensuring your home remains a timeless sanctuary.

Going for Gold
Unleashing Olympic Magic in Your Home with Grace & Holmes

As the world converges on the iconic city of Paris for the 2024 Olympics, a parallel celebration of creativity and innovation unfolds within our own realm of interior design.
At Grace & Holmes, we believe that just as athletes push boundaries and blend techniques to achieve gold, so too can design transcend traditional limits to create spaces that inspire and uplift.
Join us as we explore the exhilarating world of interior design fusion, where eclectic styles meet contemporary chic, and discover how this approach mirrors the dynamism and elegance of the Paris Olympics.
The Spirit of the Olympics in Design
The Olympics are a testament to the harmony of diverse cultures, the power of ambition, and the beauty of human potential. These principles resonate deeply with our ethos at Grace & Holmes.
Our design fusion approach is akin to the Olympic spirit, blending the best of various styles and traditions to create interiors that are not just spaces but experiences.

Imagine a living room that captures the energy of a bustling Olympic village, where mid-century modern meets Scandinavian minimalism, and a touch of Parisian elegance weaves through like a rhythmic gymnast's ribbon.
Or picture a bedroom that embodies the serenity of an Olympic athlete’s retreat, where Japanese Zen simplicity and Mediterranean warmth converge to create a haven of peace and tranquillity.
Fusing Styles: The Grace & Holmes Way
At Grace & Holmes, we champion the art of design fusion, an approach that harmoniously blends different styles to create unique and personalised interiors. Here’s how we bring this vision to life:

1. Cultural Symbiosis: Just as the Olympics unite athletes from around the globe, we combine cultural influences to enrich our designs. A Scandinavian dining table paired with Moroccan lanterns or a French provincial sofa complemented by Indian silk cushions – each piece tells a story, creating a tapestry of global aesthetics. 2. Old Meets New: The Olympics celebrate tradition and innovation alike. We honour this by juxtaposing antique charm with modern sleekness. Think of a Victorian armchair reupholstered in vibrant, contemporary fabric or a rustic wooden coffee table sitting gracefully on a futuristic, geometric rug.

3. Colour Play: The vibrancy of the Olympics can be seen in the parade of nations, each flag a burst of colour and pride. In our designs, we play with bold palettes and subtle hues to evoke emotions and set the mood. A lounge could feature a serene, neutral backdrop punctuated by pops of Olympic gold, creating a space that’s both calming and invigorating. 4. Functionality with Flair: Olympic venues are designed for peak performance. Similarly, our interiors are crafted for both beauty and utility. Custom-built storage solutions that double as statement pieces or multifunctional furniture that adapts to your needs – at Grace & Holmes, form and function go hand in hand. Bringing Parisian Elegance Home The Paris Olympics are not just about sports; they're a celebration of the city's timeless elegance and artistic heritage. Our design philosophy embraces this Parisian spirit, merging it with the eclecticism of global styles.

Picture a chic Parisian apartment, where classic Haussmannian architecture is enlivened with eclectic decor from around the world. Ornate ceilings and parquet floors set the stage for a bohemian mix of vintage finds, contemporary art, and artisanal crafts. We draw inspiration from the charming Parisian cafés, where mismatched chairs and eclectic decor create a welcoming, lived-in feel. Our interiors aim to evoke this same warmth and character, where every piece, every corner tells a story, much like the streets of Paris themselves. Your Olympic-Grade Design Journey At Grace & Holmes, we invite you to embark on your own Olympic journey of interior design. Whether you’re revamping a single room or reimagining your entire home, our design fusion approach promises spaces that are as dynamic and inspiring as the games themselves.

Explore the elegance of Paris, the diversity of the world, and the excellence of the Olympics, all within the walls of your own home. Together, let’s create interiors that not only reflect your unique style but also capture the spirit of the times. Feeling inspired? Visit us at https://www.graceandholmes.com and discover how we can transform your space into an Olympic masterpiece. Embrace the Fusion. Celebrate the Elegance. Live the Spirit. Fusion House Dreams
Transforming Bakehouse Yard Cottage into a Modern Marvel

In the heart of Matlock, Derbyshire, lies a hidden gem brimming with history and potential. Welcome to Fusion House Dreams, our new series where we take you on enchanting journey's to transform charming period properties into modern marvels without sacrificing their timeless charm.
Discover innovative design tips and exclusive tricks that blend contemporary luxury with period elegance, creating a harmonious fusion of past and present.

Transforming Bakehouse Yard Cottage into a Modern Home Without Losing its Charm
Turning a period property like Bakehouse Yard Cottage into a contemporary home while preserving its historic charm can seem daunting. However, with thoughtful planning and design, you can achieve a harmonious blend of old and new. Here are some innovative tips and tricks to guide you through this transformation.
1. Celebrate Original Features

One of the most appealing aspects of period properties is their unique architectural features. Bakehouse Yard Cottage, with its Derbyshire stone fireplaces, exposed beams, and bespoke ash carpentry, provides a perfect canvas. Highlight these elements rather than hide them:

Fireplaces: Restore the stone fireplaces to their former glory and use them as focal points in your rooms. You can modernise them slightly with contemporary fire accessories.
Exposed Beams: Leave beams exposed but treat them with wood preservatives to ensure longevity. Contrast the rustic wood with sleek modern furniture for a striking visual effect.
Stonework: Clean and repair any decorative stonework to retain its charm. Consider subtly illuminating these features with well-placed lighting.

2. Modern Comforts with a Historical Twist

Integrate modern conveniences while keeping the period aesthetic intact:

Lighting: Choose light fixtures that complement the cottage's style. Vintage-inspired pendant lights or wrought iron chandeliers can add a touch of modern elegance without feeling out of place.
Heating: Underfloor heating is a modern luxury that can be installed under traditional flagstone floors, keeping the cosy cottage vibe without the cold toes.
Smart Home Technology: Integrate smart home systems discreetly. Smart thermostats, lighting controls, and security systems can be installed without detracting from the cottage's charm.

3. Sympathetic Colour Palettes

Choose a colour scheme that enhances the natural materials and historic features of the cottage:

Natural Tones: Opt for a palette of warm neutrals and earthy tones. Colours like soft creams, sage greens, and warm greys can enhance the natural stone and wood.
Accents: Use deep, rich colours such as navy, burgundy, or forest green for accent walls or soft furnishings to add depth and character.

4. Mixing Old and New Furniture

Blend contemporary furniture with antique pieces to create a balanced look:

Statement Pieces: Invest in a few key modern furniture pieces such as a sleek sofa or a minimalist dining table. Pair these with antique dressers, vintage side tables, or reclaimed wood furniture to keep the period feel.
Soft Furnishings: Use contemporary fabrics and patterns in cushions, throws, and rugs to modernise the space. Geometric patterns or bold prints can contrast beautifully with the rustic elements.

5. Innovative Storage Solutions

Period cottages often lack built-in storage. Use creative solutions to maintain the aesthetic while adding functionality:

Built-in Units: Custom-built storage units can be designed to fit awkward spaces and blend seamlessly with the cottage’s architecture. Use materials that match or complement the existing woodwork.
Understairs Storage: Utilise the space under stairs for storage. Install drawers or cupboards that can be hidden behind bespoke wood panels.

6. Enhancing Natural Light

Maximise the natural light to make the cottage feel more spacious and airy:

Windows: The bespoke hardwood double glazed windows in Bakehouse Yard Cottage are already a great feature. Keep window treatments minimal to allow maximum light; think sheer curtains or simple blinds.
Mirrors: Strategically place mirrors to reflect light and create the illusion of more space. Antique-style mirrors can add charm while serving a practical purpose.

7. Outdoor Living Spaces

The outdoor areas of Bakehouse Yard Cottage are perfect for creating modern outdoor living spaces:

Garden Design: Maintain the informal, cottage garden feel but introduce modern elements like a stylish patio or deck for alfresco dining. Use reclaimed stone or wood to keep it in character.
Lighting: Install outdoor lighting to extend usability into the evening. Solar-powered lights or low-voltage LED string lights can add a magical touch.

8. Sustainable and Eco-friendly Upgrades

Bakehouse Yard Cottage already boasts solar PV panels and an electric vehicle charging point. Continue this eco-friendly approach with:

Insulation: Improve insulation in the walls, roof, and floors to make the cottage more energy-efficient.
Water Conservation: Install low-flow fixtures and rainwater harvesting systems to reduce water consumption.

By thoughtfully blending the old with the new, you can create a home that offers modern comforts while preserving the unique charm and character of a period property. Bakehouse Yard Cottage in Matlock, Derbyshire, is a perfect example of how a period stone-built cottage can be transformed into a contemporary haven without sacrificing its historical essence.

Painting the Future: 7 Sustainable and 100% Toxic-Free Paints for a Greener Home
At Grace and Holmes we believe that elegance meets sustainability! As a passionate advocate for creating beautiful, healthy fusion homes, I’m thrilled to share my top recommendations for sustainable, 100% toxic-free paints that will elevate your space while caring for our planet. Here are my favourite brands, each offering unique benefits and stunning colours to bring your interior dreams to life.
Why Choose Non-Toxic Paint?
Non-toxic paints are essential for maintaining a healthy home environment. Traditional paints often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can release harmful chemicals into the air for years after application.
These chemicals contribute to indoor air pollution, which, according to the World Health Organisation, can be up to five times higher than outdoor air pollution. This can lead to various health issues, including respiratory problems, headaches, and even long-term chronic diseases.
Choosing non-toxic, low-VOC paints helps reduce these risks, ensuring a safer living space for you and your loved ones.
So let's take a look at my faves, in no particualr order and feel free to comment below.

Pro Tip: MYNT paints have a beautiful finish that can transform even the simplest room into a sophisticated sanctuary. Try their soft, neutral shades for a calming bedroom retreat or bold hues to make a statement in your living room.
2. Farrow & Ball: Rich Colours, Sustainable Practices

4. Little Greene: Heritage Meets Sustainability Credit: Little Greene
Little Greene from my hometown of Manchester, combines historical charm with modern eco-friendliness. Their low-VOC paints not only look beautiful but also contribute to preserving the UK’s historic sites through their donations to the National Trust.

Five Reasons Why Non-Toxic Paint and Interiors are Better for Your Health

Improved Indoor Air Quality : Non-toxic paints release fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs), significantly reducing indoor air pollution. Cleaner air leads to fewer respiratory issues, such as asthma and allergies, and promotes overall well-being.

Reduced Risk of Chronic Illnesses : Prolonged exposure to the chemicals in conventional paints can lead to chronic health problems, including liver and kidney damage, as well as certain cancers. Non-toxic paints help mitigate these risks by eliminating harmful substances.

Safer for Vulnerable Populations : Children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems are particularly sensitive to toxins. Using non-toxic paints ensures a safer environment for these vulnerable groups, promoting healthier development and living conditions.

Prevention of Acute Symptoms : Traditional paints can cause immediate symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, and nausea due to the strong odours and chemicals they emit. Non-toxic paints, with their low odour and chemical-free composition, prevent these acute reactions.

Enhanced Mental Well-being : A healthier environment contributes to better mental health. Breathing clean air and living in a toxin-free space can reduce stress and improve mood, leading to a more positive and peaceful home atmosphere.

G&H Tips for a Sustainable Painting Project

Upcycle Old Paint: Instead of disposing of leftover paint, consider blending similar shades to create a unique, custom colour. This reduces waste and can add a bespoke touch to your décor.
Natural Cleaning: Clean brushes and rollers using natural soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals which can pollute water systems.
Eco-Friendly Tools: Invest in brushes and rollers made from sustainable materials, such as bamboo handles and recycled bristles.
Digital Colour Planning: Use digital apps to visualise paint colours in your space before purchasing. This reduces the likelihood of waste and ensures you choose the perfect shade the first time.

Why Sustainable Paint Matters

Using sustainable paints supports environmental conservation by reducing the carbon footprint associated with production and disposal. Non-toxic paints protect our health by minimising exposure to harmful chemicals, ensuring cleaner indoor air quality. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental risks to public health, and using low-VOC paints is a significant step towards mitigating this risk.
Additional Tips for a Sustainable Painting Project

Prep with Purpose: Before you start painting, make sure to use eco-friendly prep materials like biodegradable drop cloths and non-toxic primers. Proper preparation ensures a smooth, long-lasting finish.
Maximise Natural Light: Choose lighter, reflective colours to enhance natural light and reduce the need for artificial lighting. This not only saves energy but also creates a bright, welcoming atmosphere.
Ventilation is Key: Even with non-toxic paints, proper ventilation is crucial. Keep windows open during and after painting to ensure fresh air circulation.
Reuse and Recycle: Leftover paint? Store it properly for touch-ups or donate it to community projects. Recycle empty paint cans according to local guidelines to minimise waste.

Creating a beautiful, healthy living space doesn’t have to come at the expense of the environment. By choosing sustainable, 100% toxic-free paints, you’re investing in your home’s future and the planet’s well-being as well as yours.

Go Global! Elevate Your Home with cultural Inspiration

C reating a space that truly feels like you means integrating elements that reflect your unique experiences and tastes. One of the most impactful ways to achieve this is by incorporating your travels and cultural experiences into your beautiful home. Here’s why this approach is a game-changer, along with some practical tips to get you started.

So Why Integrate Global Inspiration?
Personal Stories : Each item you collect on your travels tells a story of your adventures, making your home uniquely yours. These pieces serve as constant reminders of your journeys and the precious memories you’ve made. Remember that time you lugged a handmade rug through three airports because it "just had to be in the living room"?

Diverse Aesthetics : Mixing textures, colours, and styles from different cultures creates a rich, eclectic look that adds energy, depth, and character to your home. This diversity keeps your space visually interesting and dynamic. I mean, who wants to live in a 2D monochromatic flatpack right?! Think of it as the difference between plain toast and a gourmet sandwich stuffed with flavours from around the world.

Conversation Starters : Unique pieces from around the world can spark intriguing conversations with your guests. Sharing the stories behind your decor can make for memorable and engaging social interactions. That quirky mask from Bali? Instant icebreaker. “Oh, that? Just a little something I picked up while surfing in Indonesia.”
Cultural Appreciation : By incorporating traditional crafts and designs, you celebrate and respect diverse cultures. This not only enriches your home but also promotes cultural awareness and appreciation. Plus, it’s a great way to subtly show off your sophisticated, well-travelled self.

Creative Inspiration : Global decor inspires creativity and brings a dynamic energy to your space. The varied influences can stimulate your imagination and encourage innovative decorating ideas. Your living room could be a fusion of Moroccan magic and Scandinavian simplicity—talk about a creative cocktail!

Practical Tips for Integrating Global Decor
For a high-quality, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing approach, consider these practical tips:
Ethically Sourced Textiles : Display textiles from your travels as wall art or throw pillows. Look for fair trade or artisan-made pieces to ensure sustainability and support local communities. These textiles often come with unique patterns and colours that can add a vibrant touch to any room. Think of that time you bought a stunning, hand-woven tapestry in Peru that now transforms your bedroom into an Andean sanctuary.
Blend Old and New : Mix vintage finds with modern pieces for a balanced look. Opt for antiques or locally crafted items to add authenticity and avoid mass-produced plastic decor. This approach not only adds charm but also reduces your environmental footprint. Like the time you paired a sleek IKEA sofa with a rustic coffee table from a tiny village in Italy—it’s all about balance!

Handmade Ceramics and Art : Incorporate handmade ceramics, masks, or sculptures. These items often have a lower environmental impact and support traditional artisans. Handcrafted pieces bring a sense of originality and craftsmanship that mass-produced items simply can't match. Remember that hand-painted bowl you carried back from Japan, now a centrepiece of your dining table? Worth every bit of bubble wrap .

Natural Materials : Use decor elements made from natural materials like wood, stone, or bamboo. They are sustainable and add a warm, organic touch to your space. Natural materials also tend to age beautifully, adding to their charm over time. Imagine a bamboo chair from Thailand that whispers tales of the tropical rainforest with every creak.
Books and Maps : Use books, maps, or souvenirs as decor elements. They add a personal touch and can be a sustainable choice if sourced second-hand. Vintage maps or travel books can serve as both educational and decorative pieces. That dog-eared guidebook from your trip to Paris? Perfect for the coffee table and a great conversation starter.
